WHY "JUNK-DRAWER" PHOTO?

Historically home to myriad mingled items, either in one's home or work, a "junk-drawer" is familiar to all of us. Some have only one drawer, others have many. Some items were once useful or will be useful again, while others persist well past their functional usefulness to become mementos, curiosities, or scrap. We rediscover these items periodically in times of need or desire, fits of panic, or spells of curiosity. And these items each evoke memory and story. It's the go-to for "that thing you were looking for."

Similarly, through a lens, we notice myriad random aspects of our world: objects, emotions, people, textures, history. All of these things are familiar, but we are compelled through imagery to discover—or perhaps re-discover—qualities of these captures previously unrealized. These unknowns tell unique and evolving stories for everyone and we each process these bits and pieces in ways which best suit us, whether for use now or the future.

And so it strikes me that there is a distinct parallel in how we create, collect, and sort through imagery to which we're drawn, to who we were, are, or want to be. We notice certain things which resonate with us, file these away, and then repeatedly rediscover qualities of the image, the event captured, or ourselves, when we see it.

So in a way, it's just like rummaging through a Junk-Drawer! And so while you're here, I hope you find that thing you were looking for...
